How to set a free shipping threshold on Shopify (and get more shoppers to reach it)
“Free shipping over $50” is one of the simplest ways to grow average order value, but only if shoppers know the offer exists and how close they are. Here’s how to pick the number, set it up in Shopify, and help shoppers reach it.
A free shipping threshold is one of the simplest ways to grow average order value. It gives shoppers a clear goal and a reason to add one more item instead of paying for delivery. But the threshold only works if shoppers know it exists and can see how close they are to it.
This guide covers the whole job: choosing the number, setting it up in Shopify admin, and showing it on your storefront so more orders actually reach it.
What is a free shipping threshold?
A free shipping threshold is the minimum order value at which shipping becomes free, for example “Free shipping on orders over $50”. Below that amount shoppers pay your normal rate. Above it, delivery costs them nothing.
It works because it turns shipping into a target. A shopper with $38 in their cart has a good reason to add a $15 product rather than pay $6 for delivery. They get something they want, and you get a bigger order.
How to choose the right threshold
There’s no number that suits every store. Start from your own data:
- Find your average order value. In Shopify admin, open Analytics and check average order value for the last 30 to 90 days.
- Set the threshold a little above it. A reasonable starting point is 15 to 30% above your average order value. Too low, and you give free shipping to orders that would have happened anyway. Too high, and shoppers give up on reaching it.
- Check your margins. You now pay for shipping on those orders. Look at what a shipment really costs you and make sure the margin on the extra item covers it.
- Look at your price points. Pick a threshold that one realistic add-on can reach. If most products cost $25 and your average order is $40, a $50 threshold needs one more product. A $70 threshold might need two, and many shoppers won’t bother.
How to set up free shipping over a set amount in Shopify
In Shopify itself, free shipping above an amount is a shipping rate you set up in your shipping settings. Some apps can create a free shipping discount for you instead. Whichever you use, shoppers should see one threshold everywhere.
- In Shopify admin, go to Settings → Shipping and delivery.
- Open the shipping profile you want to change (usually General shipping rates) and find the shipping zone.
- Click Add rate, name it something like “Free shipping”, and set the price to 0.
- Click Add conditions, choose Based on order price, and enter your threshold as the minimum price.
- Save, and keep your paid rate for orders below the threshold.
Repeat this for every zone where you offer free shipping. If you only want free shipping for a limited time, you can create a free shipping discount with a minimum purchase amount under Discounts instead.
Why shoppers miss your threshold
Setting the rate is only half the job. Many stores only reveal free shipping at checkout, when the shopper has already decided what to buy. By then it’s too late to add anything. Unexpected shipping costs are also one of the most common reasons shoppers abandon checkout, so your offer should be visible well before that step.
To reach the threshold, shoppers need three things:
- to know the offer exists,
- to see how far they are from it,
- an easy way to close the gap.
The next three sections cover each of these with apps from the Seny library.
Show shoppers how close they are with a free shipping bar
Free Shipping Upsell BoosterShows a live “You’re $12 away from free shipping” message and progress bar, then switches to a reward message once the shopper qualifies.Explore appThe Free Shipping Upsell Booster reads the live cart total and shows the remaining amount with a progress bar. As shoppers add or remove items, the amount updates. Once they cross the threshold, the bar switches to a reward message so they know they’ve qualified and can head to checkout.
A few things make the bar work better:
- Use the exact same number as in Shopify. If the bar promises free shipping at $50 and checkout charges for delivery, you lose trust fast.
- Suggest the item that closes the gap. When a shopper is close, show a lower-priced product that gets them over the line, so the next step is one tap away.
- Show it where decisions happen. Product pages, the cart page, and the cart drawer are where shoppers decide what else to add.
- Keep the message short. “$12 away from free shipping” is easier to read at a glance than a full sentence about your shipping policy.
Put progress and add-ons inside the cart
Slide Cart DrawerReplaces your theme cart with a slide-out drawer that includes free-shipping progress and one-click add-ons.Explore appThe cart is where shoppers are closest to buying, which makes it the best place to show progress. The Slide Cart Drawer opens over the current page when a shopper adds a product. It shows the order, a free-shipping progress bar, and one-click add-on rows for small extras. Shoppers can close the gap without leaving the page they were browsing.
If you use both apps, the booster covers product pages and the drawer covers the cart, so shoppers see their progress at every step.
Announce the offer on every page
Announcement BarPuts “Free shipping on orders over $50” at the top of every page, so new visitors see the offer straight away.Explore appShoppers who have just arrived don’t have anything in their cart yet, so a progress bar means little to them. An Announcement Bar at the top of the store tells everyone about the offer from the first page view.
The two do different jobs. The Announcement Bar shows the same message to everyone. The Free Shipping Upsell Booster is cart-aware and shows each shopper their own remaining amount. Together they cover the whole visit.
Measure and adjust
Give the threshold a few weeks, then compare with the period before:
- Average order value. Did it go up?
- Share of orders above the threshold. If almost every order qualifies easily, the threshold may be too low. If very few reach it, it may be too high, or you may need cheaper items to close the gap.
- Shipping costs. Make sure the extra revenue covers the shipping you now pay for.
Change one thing at a time, either the threshold or the products you suggest, so you can tell what made the difference.
Quick checklist
- Threshold set a little above your average order value
- Margin on a typical extra item covers the shipping cost
- Free rate added in Settings → Shipping and delivery for every zone
- Offer announced at the top of every page
- Live progress shown on product pages and in the cart
- Low-priced gap-closing products suggested
- Results checked after a few weeks
